The layout is one frame taken out of something that was moving: bars mid-sweep, letters mid-exit, a word cropped because it has not finished crossing yet. Nothing is centred and nothing is resolved, which is the point — the eye is made to travel, and the only place it can settle is the tea. Steam does the same work inside the photograph, so the still object and the kinetic graphics agree with each other instead of competing. Primaries are used flat and unmixed, which lets four hues overlap without turning to mud, and the hanzi are assembled from the same strips so a character reads as construction rather than ornament. Type in two extreme sizes, enormous and tiny, removes the middle register where sales language usually lives. What is left is a shop that moves and a leaf that does not.
